The surveillance state is growing, and growing quickly. The truly outrageous thing is how few people are taking notice, and how many seem completely comfortable with a growing eye in the sky, watching their every move. As more and more Americans begin to shrug off their privacy rights, and opt for “security” over liberty, the attacks on our freedoms become bolder.
In New York City, new metal towers have been constructed seemingly overnight. Their purpose was not immediately known, and after questioning the Chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, we know little more other than this – they are “holding fiber optics” for the Department of Homeland Security.
The giant metal structures are said to be a part of a $100 million project by the MTA, and new towers are scheduled to be constructed at various bridges around the city.
The towers themselves are not the disease, but rather yet another symptom of Americans willfully giving up their freedoms and accepting the “new way” things have to be. In classic Orwellian fashion, reporters and concerned citizens, even members of the MTA council, are given virtually no details of exactly what these structures are supposed to be used for.
CBS Local of NYC followed up on the story and asked those in charge.
The MTA’s man in charge of the bridges and tunnels, Cedrick Fulton, dodged Carlin’s questions Wednesday.
“I said no comment,” he said.
Some MTA board members, including New York City Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg, say they know too little about the towers – even with half the money already spent and some of the towers already up.
“A lot of the board members felt they didn’t have all the details they would have wanted, myself included,” she said.
No doubt, when (if) answers come, they will include “counter-terrorism” measures that no one needs to worry about. These ugly tech towers are here for your safety. Just as the NDAA is here for your safety; just as the NSA is here for your safety; just as all government surveillance of its own people is here for their own safety.
Sadly, people will accept these towers in time. The fact that the government is no longer trying to hide the surveillance state behind deceptive legislation titles like the “Patriot” Act is a clue that they realize just how dumb and naive Americans have become. Instead of worrying about the size of the leviathan that threatens to destroy our very way of life, we’re overcome by stories of football players not standing for the National Sing-a-Long.
The left, which at one time prided itself on standing up for civil liberties, is now more concerned with Dr Seuss than with the NSA. The right, which at one time stood against the never ending growth in government, is more interested in showing loyalty to the President than with loyalty to the Constitution. This all creates an environment, a petrie dish if you will, for experimenting on just how much the State can get away with.
